Smart Girls

by Erica Brokaw

Smart Girls is an outgrowth of the popular and effective after school program Smart Moves and teaches fitness, education, good health and high self esteem to girls ages 8-17 encouraging healthy attitudes and lifestyles for the future.

Texas State University sorority Sigma Delta Lambda became involved with the after school program last fall 2011.  The girls meet every Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.  Each week a new topic is addressed.  The girls talk about important issues and create positive images about themselves and each other.

The goal of the program is to teach the girls to express negativity in their lives to one another in a healthy way then deal with that negativity by thinking positively.  In the safe and friendly environment, the girls learn to communicate with each other and break through the shyness of speaking their growing minds.

Through skits and talk time, the group explores everything from good hygiene to respect of all other people.  In learning about different perspectives and what is expected of them at school, home and with peers, they gain confidence and hold themselves to higher ethical standards building responsible citizens for the future.
